  • As long as I can remember. Both my parents listened to a lot of music around the house which led to me taking cellos lessons at my primary school. As I grew up it just kept becoming a bigger part of what I did.

  • Either Orpheus or working with Diimpa at Heide Gallery.

  • I played at nationals for chess representing ACT.

  • It is impossible to choose but one that sticks out is Patricia Piccinini’s Sky whale. Created to celebrate the 100th birthday of Canberra it is impossible to miss and therefore engages people who would not normally engage in art.

  • Dimitri Shostakovich’s 2nd movement in his 10th Symphony is a good way to get moving or Cat Empire’s wine song if you fancy a drink.

Ian Crossfield is a classical double bass player whose passion lies in new music, operatic and symphonic playing. Working within the opera and symphonic industry Ian has formed a repertoire of sounds and techniques he hopes to incorporate into a smaller ensemble.

From articulate pointed runs to long dark rich tones these sounds are often hidden behind an opera singers voice or symphony orchestra. Ian intends to make his bass speak in a way it often does but that is not often heard and make people aware of the power, finesse and wide library of extended techniques the double bass can produce.
